Honouring 100 Years of South Africa’s Signature Wine
The Pinotage Centenary Medallion was unveiled at The Cape Mint™, marking the official start of a year-long global celebration of 100 years of Pinotage. Forged in precious metal by Sub-Saharan Africa’s oldest private mint, this collector’s item immortalises the legacy of South Africa’s proudly homegrown grape. In partnership with the Pinotage Association, the medallion pays tribute to resilience, innovation, and heritage — honouring both pioneers and future champions of Pinotage. A limited number of medallions will be released in 2025, encased in custom mint preservation boxes. A symbol. A legacy. A piece of South African history.
Struck at The Cape Mint™, this medallion is more than a symbol — it’s a celebration of the grape that changed South African wine. Rooted in 1925 by Professor Abraham Izak Perold’s bold crossing of Pinot Noir and Cinsaut (Hermitage), Pinotage has grown into a world-renowned varietal.
“This medallion doesn’t just commemorate the past — it inspires pride and momentum for the next 100 years of Pinotage.”
— Bennie Howard, Cape Wine Master
This initiative is a partnership between The Cape Mint, The Pinotage Association, and the Maties Alumni.
